Bowers and Wilkins 802
The Bowers and Wilkins 802 is a legendary speaker that is used in studio’s like Abbey Road and a lot of other famous studio’s all over the world. That is one of the reasons why I have chosen to use this heavy weight champion as the main monitoring system. The speakers are driven by a Hypex Class-D nCore amp, rated at 400 watt RMS per channel and for cabling I use HUGE W&M LS-01 cables.
Even though these speakers are near perfect, there is always room for improvement. I thought the height was a bit to low for mastering since these speakers where designed for a listening environment where the listener is sitting on a couch, which is lower then a mastering-desk and chair. That is why I raised the 80kg heavy 802’s using 15cm of 60kg solid concrete. For decoupling I used precisely calculated Sorbothane® pads between the concrete stands and 10mm thick solid concrete layered wood. This way there is no coupling between the speakers and the floor which drastically improved the performance. In total the weight is over 140kg per side, but it is worh it! The low end is more solid and detailed and the mid-range is more relaxed and direct.
